While the Film Industry seeks locations throughout the US, North Carolina continues to be a premiere
location for shoots. Here are just a few of the notables that have graced this state:
- Bull Durham
- The Fugitive
- The Abyss
- Hunt for Red October
- Firestarter
- The Color Purple
- The Green Mile
- Dirty Dancing
- Talladega Nights
- The Bedroom Window
- Kiss The Girls
Oh my, that is just a smattering of what has been filmed in this picturesque state as far as feature films go. What about the TV shows that are filmed here? Here's a few of those as well:
- Dawson's Creek
- One Tree Hill
- Surface
North Carolina has EARNED it's rank as one of the top spot for filming locations. Major casting agencies dot the state and are always seeking new talent and extras. There are always opening for crew members in any capacity and the list of future productions is too long to list.
While there are a multitude of reasons that make North Carolina attractive for filming here is one little known fact. North Carolina offers a Film Incentive. There is a full 15% tax credit on productions over $250,000, and not exceeding a credit per project over $7.5 million (on an approximately $50m in-state spend).
The tax credit has been extended to January 1, 2014. In addition, North Carolina must receive an "on-screen" credit. There are other qualifying factors which you can read about here.

Hi Leesa,
I am aware that Charlotte has been used as film locations quite often. Unfortunately, I can not quote the movies' names. Do you know?
well, tony, Shallow Hal, Days of Thunder (your's truely was in it), Talladega Nights, Carrie 2, Original Kinds of Comedy are just a few.....
Hey Leesa! Of course NC is my first choice (outside of LA). I wish I had an upcoming project, dang it! In all seriousness, I had no idea that all those things were being filmed in NC. Very cool indeed!
cartman - girl, you know it! Those are just a few that i mentioned - this place is crazy with movie history! you come visit, I'll take you to Wilmington and I'll show you some spots - awesome. Well, if you're into that kinda thing! ;)
Of course NC is a top spot for filming!
It's beautiful here!
The weather's great.
It's the home of Leesa Finley and Craig Rutman.....
Need I say more?!!!
You know I am totally into that kind of thing! Leesa, you are at the top of my list to visit!
So there is one more reason to brag about North Carolina! My friends back north are going to be so tired of me bragging! LOL I do it on a regular basis!
craig - HAHA - I think you said it all! you are the best Craig - besides you have many touches of celebrity in you - i think you are already on the inside track!
cartman - (sorry if that pisses you off but it just sticks now!) let's meet in NO and I can definately show you some spots there too!
carol - don't stop bragging Carol! It NEVER gets old! this is the BEST place to live!
I think that's great for your state. Here in Ohio, the local film commission has tried many times to get the Governor to follow suit with many other states and offer tax credits to the film industry for coming here. He has vetoed legislation many times but has recently been re-thinking the idea. I think this could really help especially with our economy struggling so badly. I think it's time Ohio steps up to the plate and at least gets its fair share of that multi-billion dollar industry. Thanks for the post.
Don't forget the Third Coast! We do a lot around here, too! Been there, done that and have the movie star pictures to proves it. If you ever get the chance, go for it! Anyone asks, encourage it, if you can influence anyone - DO SO.
Hey, business is business and the movie business is very good indeed!
Love your blog Leesa!! You are so right - as a matter of fact filming will be happening tomorrow in Wilmington for One Tree Hill - they are closing some of the roads here to film. THis summer we expect to have a major movie in town filming with Hillary Duff and Toby Keith. Exciting times in Wilmington and NC...
Dan and Amy - I think he certainly should reconsider! there is quite a bit of activity here in NC - the incentive i mentioned isn't the only one. the governor should reconsider!
anna - me too! it is SO MUCH fun to be involved with a film regardless of capacity.
kathy - YES! it is "Provinces" that will be filmed there. there have been many times I have walked down Dock St and had to step over power cords, etc because there was a movie being filmed. You have such a beautiful area in Wilmington!
Great post Leesa!! I actually have a friend who's daughter works for Warner Brothers in Wilmington and works on the One Tree Hill program (she's an artist).
teresa - that's pretty cool! Wilmington is a mecca for actors, and artists of all types! Kathy Knight knows that!
