Paddy - it took me a while to get use to the earlier schedule in the south.  But, once you're use to it no big deal!

Year-round?  So, go a semester, get a month or so off...go a semester...month or so off type thing?

Posted by Clint Miller (Real Estate Client Referrals, LLC (RECR)) over 2 years ago

Clint - pretty much.  9 weeks on 3 weeks off and it is continual.  My son gets the SAME number of days off as traditional (including holidays) but they are just spread out differently.  I LOVE it!  IMO - they don't forget information from one grade to the next and play "catch-up" the first few weeks of school.  Also, we can take vacations at odd times and I don't have to come up with activities for an entire summer.  While traditional school starts in a few weeks and his friends will be starting 3rd grade - he started 3rd grade July 9 - that does NOT mean that he is ahead because, remember - they all get the same amount of days off.  Make sense?   I am trying to develop a post about year round schools this week - HIGHLY contentious around here - people either LOVE it or HATE it.

It's getting to be that time again isn't it???  My two oldest used to go to year round.  I loved it, but then we moved!  It seemed that right when they started to get sick of school, it was time for a break!

Leesa,

Talk about falshbacks, Greg when he said SWATS I started to sweat the memories were just too vivid.  I went to school just looking for trouble and normally found it.

Pam - I LOVE year round school.  I am surprised that it is not more prevalent in other parts o the country.  When people from the north move down they look at me like I am nuts when I explain it to them!

Bill - Thanks so much!  We can all use a little help when the school year begins!

Carole - Thanks!  Just trying to get as many links with info in one place so people don't have to run all over the web trying to find it.

Greg - You got swats?  I can't believe that!

Don - You'll be okay - it's just a post!  Thanks for sticking it out long enough though to comment!

Hi Leesa,

I was just telling my son I will never get use to the southern school schedule. My grandchildren were talking about back to school at the dinner table Sunday. I do like having them out mid May so we can have an early start on vacation though.

I've been graduated from college for a year and a half, and I still dread that ominous phrase -- "Back to school!" Thanks a lot.

Of course that's because for us in Minnesota, back to school is synonymous with "Summer's almost over, what do you have to show for it?" and "Get ready, because these 95 degree, humid days will soon be negative 20 and dry as a bone."

Oh well. Good info.
