Drive-in Movies, Classic Cars, Gigantic Pixie Stix and Kitsch - My Kinda Night.....

By show of hands.....When was the last time that YOU went to the drive-in movies?????  Stick 'em WWAAYYY up - I'm counting!

Well, in My Back Yard...you can do just that!  The Finley family had a fantastic outing Friday night that was so worth telling you about - just a short drive from Wake Forest to Henderson (30 mins) was a fun-filled, family adventure that my son (and husband) just adored...

The Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre is alive and well!  A fully operational drive in movie theatre with the latest releases, great concession stand and an evening under the stars full of fun!

I wanted to surprise my husband and son with something different - they had no idea what was in store.  We headed out US 1 and my husband thought for sure we were going to Virginia to a lake that we keep thinking about going to.  What he couldn't figure out is why we were going so late!  HAHA

When I exited the highway towards the Vance County Industrial Park I think they were both a little worried.  Had they done something that finally took me over the edge and I had some dark thoughts of dumping them off?  :)  Fortunately, all worries were quelled when they saw the sign and that's when the excitement piqued!  What was most fortunate for us was the Sufolk Rod & Muscle Car Club was making an appearance - talk about some gorgeous cars!

Guys, for the Finley family to get into the movie, all have cheeseburges, fries, drinks, mega Pixie Stix and popcorn, it was well under $40.00.  Honestly, when was the last time you made it to the regular cineplex without taking out a loan?

The staff at the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre were ultra-friendly, very welcoming and truely made you feel like you were home.  Before the movie there was a clip highlighting the history of the drive-in movies - out of over 4000+ drive-ins at one time there are only a shy bit past 400 still in existence and OPERATING in the US.  Fortunately, for the folks around here there happens to be one of them located In My Back Yard....

I hope you enjoy the pictures!  The first few are of the theatre and the last half are the classic cars - GREAT family night!

Sounds like great fun!  We used to have so many drive ins here in Jersey.  I think I read the last one closed a couple of years ago.  The car show is the icing on the cake...give me a 67 GTO!

Pixie Stix!!  I grew up in Jersey, and like Laura (above me) says - we had lots of drive-ins.    Luckily there is one not too far from where I live now in SC :)        Great memories from the drive-in ;)       Here's a great closing gift idea.....movie night on you!

How fun. The last time I went to a drive in movie was in college. A group of us went to a horror movie marathon. How nice it was for you to discover this little gem and a muscle car show too.

Leesa, what a great idea for a family night out!  Unfortunately the last Drive-In movie theater in Lancaster County was torn down a couple of years ago.

Leesa , we too have a drive in about 30 minutes away, this place has 3 sceens and you tune in you car radio to the right frequency to hear the movie. It's in the lakes region across from weir's beach, so can be the end of a great day Thanks for the reminder! Steve

Laura - I had forgot how much fun drive-ins were!  As for the cars?  Wow - some really awesome ones!

Don - I laugh in the face of the fun police - those coppers will never take me alive!

Kara - You are lucky to haveone close to you now. Visit it while you can - it will be worth it!  And the Pixie Stix?  I lived on those things when I was a kid - my nickname was Pixie, seriously, some old friends still call me that.  When my son got one Friday I just had to try it again - what was I thinking???

Cindy - A horror movie marathon - now THAT would have been fun!

Brian - It was really sad to see the clip before the film chronicling the history or the drive-in.  But, hey, I have mine in my area and I am as happy as can be!

Leesa- Great fun! It has been a long, long time since i went to a drive- in! They are rare these days.

Lori -  I remember that, too!  There is a night at Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre where a car load gets in for $10.  Regular addmission is $5 per adult, $3 for kids 6-12 and free under 6 - still not bad at all!

Shaun - Live vicariously through my montage and experience it all over again!

Vanessa - It was a blast!  Wish you had the chance to do it again!

Now that sounds like a fun night. I wish we had somewhere around here that still had a drive-in. Glad you and your family enjoyed yourselves!

Leesa - That does sound like fun.  I have never been to a drive-in movie.  There was one that was within bike riding distance of my house growing up, but it only showed XXX movies.  Most of the drive-ins in Texas do not exist anymore.

We only have one drive in theatre left around here and I would love to see them do an event like this. I would be all over it as I could take the whole family and get to see some awesome cars!
