The Drought - An Impact Greater Than You Know.....

Oh my!  While I completely understand the conundrum that the town faces I just can't imagine a summer without the Community Pool at Holding Park!  It is such an iconic landmark and it bustling with activity during the summer!

Due to the horrific drought that we have experienced here in the south the Wake Forest town leaders are contemplating NOT opening the pool this summer.  It is a decision that they do not take lightly.  From the article:

Wake Forest commissioners said they would decide by May 1 whether to keep the Holding Park pool closed for the summer in an effort to conserve water during the drought.

"This is not a decision we approached happily nor with a smile on our faces," Commissioner Peter Thibodeau said.

Leesa,

It's a sad legacy of the drought. We have had some relief here in GA, actually in a rain surplus now, but lake levels are still very low.

I am ashamed to say that my daughter received a master's degree at Wake Forest, but I have never visited your lovely town. It's on my "to-do" list!

Here's hoping the "powers' send rain your way.  I used to know a very wise gentleman who told me a rainy season would always follow a drought.  Generally, it seemed like he was correct.

Richard -We have had a little rain as well but just not enough.  What scares me most is the thought of loosening water restrictions!  Due to recent rains that is the rumor - I hope that they don't.  If we don't continue to conserve we will find ourselves in this same situation over and over again!

Diane -  I sure hope you are right!  It was just terrible here (all of the Southeast) and we really need the rain!

I can appreciate that the local authorities must do what is best for the community, but the kids...The pool for a few years for my 13 year old daughter WAS the summer! And the real tragedy? Other parts of the country are inundated with water.

Oh I know and rain and water is so important.  Hope it comes down soon and your water problems diminish...soon!

Leesa, we had similar severe water restrictions in North Texas for about six months with limited sprinklering days after a two year drought until we FINALLY got heavy rains in Apr-Jun 2007 and they were lifted. When the pools can't be filled, it really is serious. I hope the summer rain pattern for the southeastern U.S. comes back to normal soon. I was in an Atlanta hotel a few weeks ago and there were signs all over the bathroom about conserving water.

They are using this as a pawn to further the cause.  I have been living in a drought stricken community for years.  There are ways for communities to recycle water so this is just plain sad.  They can also put solar covers on it at night to prevent evaporation.

I hope they can figure it out before summer!

I think they may find this to be a more expensive mistake when they find the youth is looking for something to do and can't go to the pool they may find other things to do that maybe illegal in nature. Kids do strange things sometimes when they are board.

Hi Leesa,
Oh no!  That would be terrible, a summer with no pool.  I hope it does not come down to this.
