Make It Right 9 - They Need Us!

Make It Right 9I posted way back in January about this extraordinary project in this hopes of having people getting interested and searching within themselves of how they might contribute.  The post was So, What DOES Raleigh and Brad Pitt Have in Common???  While that post may have been about the correlation between Raleigh and Brad Pitt the subtext of the post was serious.

And now, on a more somber note and with a genuine request from the heart, I ask that you revisit Make It Right 9As a result of the greatest natural disaster in U.S. history, Make It Right 9 formed to help rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward.  It wasn't (and isn't) a typical rebuild.  It is a project about re-building green and affordable housing.  The MIR (Make It Right) project focuses on the goal of constructing 150 homes (one of the larger rebuilding projects in the city), with an emphasis on developing an affordable system that could be replicated.

In addition to the MIR project there is The Pink Project. * Pink is a virtual city of Hope. A hybrid of art, architecture, cinema and media, Pink is conceived as an informational, commemorative, communication tool which raises awareness and activates individual participation to heal local wounds in need of global aid.  *From The Pink Project website

Make It Right 9 needed us then and they still need us now.  My only hope and prayer is that they don't lose all of their efforts to the impending Hurrcanes Gustav and Hannah.

For more information please visit the various links throughout this post or watch the several videos that I have gathered.

Thanks so much Rainers!

Historic Homes After the Hurricane and Floodwaters....

I had intended on posting this for reference in the event the information may be needed.  Unfortunately, it would appear that Gustav and Hannah have increased the need to have this information out there.

While this post is intended for historic properties it does benefit the owners of ANY home whether historic or not when it comes to the clean up after a hurricane.

"Some tips and advice for drying out your home are:

  • Natural ventilation and a SLOW drying process is the ONLY way to go.  Irreparable damage can result by the use of heat forced air.
  • Before beginning the process of drying out your building you must first address any health or safety concerns.  Always assume that power lines are active!  Even if the power is out in your surrounding area ALWAYS turn off the power to the house at the connection.  You also want to check for any natural gas leaks and be sure to turn it off at it's source as well.  Keep in mind that floodwaters are most often contaminated with sewage and/or animal waste.  It is imperative that you protect yourself with goggles, face masks, and gloves.  Everything will need to be disinfected.
  • Be sure to photograph all damage to the property prior to clean up.  Please refer to Hurricanes and Historic Properties for additional tips on reporting damage.
  • Make temporary repairs to the propertysuch as tarps on damaged roofs and windows to help prevent additional water from getting inside the building.  Some materials to consider are tarpaulin, 30- or 90-pound felt paper, and plywood covered with tarpaper. "

Please visit What's YOUR Circa?  for a full post (Water Damaged Historic Homes - What To Do....) on what to do with your home after a storm.  This might just be information that you need.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of my friends along the Gulf Coast.

Wake Forest NC Is A Fantastic Place To Live - Let Me Make It A Little Easier!

I have been fortunate to call Wake Forest my home for many years!  I blog about it non-stop, I get out and meet the business owners and residents.  It is wonderful to walk downtown and wave to all the people that I know.  It can be like that for you, too!

This wonderful community has a wide variety of homes to choose from in all price ranges and of all styles.  Hopefully you will stick with me over the next few weeks while I let you take a peek at all there is to offer.

In the meantime, I wanted to share my "special" for the month of September.  For all of my buyers I will provide a FREE American Home Shield Warranty for the month of September.  What does that mean?  It means that EVERY buyer that enters into a contract the month of September will receive a warranty.  Doesn't matter if it is a home that I have listed or not!

To make the deal even sweeter I will also provide a free American Home Shield Warranty to my SELLERS!  Just think - while your home is on the market it will be covered!  If you are thinking of listing your home September is the month to do it!  This is a fantastic way to market your home to buyers and it relieves a little stress from you while you are on the market.

What does an American Home Shield warranty cover?

  • Heating
  • Air Conditioning
  • Ductwork
  • Plumbing
  • Whirlpool Motor & Pump
  • Plumbing Stoppages
  • Water Heaters
  • Electrical
  • Exhaust/Vent/Attic Fans
  • Built-In Microwaves
  • Dishwashers
  • Garbage Disposals
  • Ranges/Ovens/Cooktops
  • Trash Compactors
  • 13 SEER, Sediment, Rust and Corrosion and Insufficienty Maintainted Equipment

And that's just THE BASICS!  Plans can be customized further!

Why am I doing this?  To make it all the more easier to buy and sell in Wake Forest, NC.  Come explore My Back Yard....I think you are going to love it here!

Check out some of the wonderful homes on the market at Circa Properties - the one you have been waiting for just might be there!

Wow, school starts Monday (for traditional students) and you can tell!  Things started slowing down a little - I guess we have to be sure the kids are in bed a little earlier and all of our mornings start a little earlier!

Don't let that fool you!  September will start our fairs and festivals and roll us right into the Holiday Season......get prepared!  Besides that - we can count on Festival Friday at Festival Park to ALWAYS bring us some good times on Friday Nights!

Prizes will be awarded each week to select Festival Friday performers. Area residents are encouraged to bring your lounge chairs, blankets and enjoy. For more information, contact Elizabeth Johnson at ejohnson@medfaxxinc.com.

Wake Forest NC Calendar of Events - Aug 18 - 24

I hope that if you are in Wake Forest you were able to take advantage of the Festival Friday and Wake Forest Coffee Company pairing this last Friday!  I was not able to go but could hear the band from my front porch!  It sounded like it was a blast!

I apologize for this getting out a day late but work took hold yesterday and I just wasn't able to get the calendar out!

From the Town of Wake Forest Website:

Firing RangeTraining
Monday, August 18 & Tuesday, August 19; 4:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Police Department Firing Range, behind Flaherty Park Community Center
Residents in the area are advised that the Wake Forest Police Department will conduct firing range training on Monday and Tuesday, August 18-19, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the police department firing range, located behind the Flaherty Park Community Center. The firing range is utilized by Wake Forest Police officers who require instruction and practice in order to obtain current certification in the use of firearms. This certification is required in order for the officer to fulfill his duties for the Wake Forest Police Department.

Public Blood Drive
Tuesday, August 19; Noon to 5:00 p.m.
Franklin Academy High School Theater
The American Red Cross has issued an emergency appeal for blood as the Wake, Franklin, and Warren Counties have exceptionally low supplies of blood available for patients in area hospitals, in dialysis treatment, in cancer treatment, or in some other life-threatening condition. PLEASE, if you are 17 or older (with a valid i.d.); are in good health; and weigh 110 pounds or more, schedule an appointment to donate blood at our very own American Red Cross blood drive. By donating a pint of your blood (and less than an hour of your time), you could save as many as three people's lives! There are few ways better than this to make a vital difference to others in our community. Please contact Lisa Bender at BenderL@franklinacademy.org to schedule your appointment! The drive will start at noon on Tuesday, August 19, in our theater and will run until 5 pm. Appointments are made for every quarter hour; four donors can schedule for each time slot. The last appointment of the day will be at 4 pm, so hurry to get your preferred time!

Festival Friday
Friday, August 22; 6:00 p.m.
Festival Park, S. White Street
Festival Friday is scheduled to be held each Friday from June 6 through October 17 on the grounds of Festival Park. In case of rain, the festivities will move indoors. Admission is $3. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment. The point of Festival Friday is to provide a venue every Friday night for local teens to gather in a safe, fun environment and encourage local artists to show off their skills.
