Cool Cities Program
Tuesday, October 30; 12:00 p.m.
Wake Forest Town Hall
The North Carolina Sierra Club will formally present Mayor Vivian Jones with a plaque recognizing the Town of Wake Forest as a "Cool City" during a special ceremony Tuesday, October 30 at Town Hall. The event will begin at noon. The Cool Cities program recognizes local governments that commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 7 percent below 1990 levels within five years. Among Wake Forest's "green" initiatives is the addition of alternative-fuel vehicles to reduce gasoline consumption. Also, in August, the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners endorsed the U.S. mayors' climate protection agreement, which sets a five-year goal of slashing carbon-dioxide emissions. In addition to the plaque presentation, students from East Millbrook Middle School will offer a presentation on global warming and perform a song. The public is welcome to attend. For more information contact Tom Jensen, North Carolina Sierra Club, at (919) 833-8467 (work) or (919) 260-2990 (cell).
Trunk or Treat
Wednesday, October 31; 5:30 p.m.
Wake Forest Baptist Church
What's a church to do when Halloween falls on Wednesday? Celebrate! What better time for the church to be a presence in our community than on All Hallows' Eve amongst all the ghosts, ghouls, goblins, and other creatively dressed creatures strolling about seeking goodies? Here's our plan: On October 31 we will meet at the church as usual for our fellowship supper at 5:30 pm. Feel free to spice it up a bit and wear your costume! We will celebrate birthdays and pray together as always, then head out to North Main Street as a church family for Trunk-Or-Treat. We will set up at the north end of the Wake Forest Birthplace where we will have 10-12 cars in place with open trunks full of candy to distribute. Our Youth On Mission will have a receptacle in place to receive canned goods for their Trick-Or-Can project, and we are encouraging all to bring a can of food for our community food bank in exchange for a handful of candy. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to have intergenerational fun and fellowship together, and an even greater opportunity for us to provide a presence in our community and reach out to our neighbors. Mark your calendars, get out of the boat, and by all means . . . bring your can to Trunk-Or-Treat! Hey, kids, be sure to have your parents bring you out to Trunk-Or-Treat on October 31. All you have to do is dress up in your Halloween costume and bring cans for candy-that is, bring a can of food to our site on North Main Street (think of it as CAN-dy Land) for a Halloween treat. We'll be waiting for you!
